Hi everyone,

I ended up being intrigued enough by the possibility of what Paige time travel could do, and here is a story snippet. I'd appreciate any comments and thoughts. :)

Yuletide nominations are open. Is anyone here definitely planning to nominate The Americans? If you are, what characters are you nominating?

I was hoping we could coordinate our efforts.

This probably should have its own post but I was wondering if anyone else would be interested in a single fandom gift exchange, not this calendar year but the next. I was thinking about an exchange modeled along the lines of [community profile] fringe_exchange, which would be open to writers, artists, podficcers and vidders.

I thought it would be fun to slot it between the first of the year and the beginning of the new season. Alternatively, it could help fill the long hiatus between the end of season three and the start of season four.

wendelah1: Elizabeth Jennings plus text "Come home" (Elizabeth Jennings)
[personal profile] wendelah1
I wrote this for [livejournal.com profile] alba17 for the [livejournal.com profile] rarewomen exchange. She asked for Elizabeth Jennings; her prompt: "Anything about the dual nature of her life and (how) she emotionally handles it; anything about her relationship with Phillip and how incredibly complicated it is."

Title: Safehouse
Author: [personal profile] wendelah1
Rating: Gen
Word Count: 2328
Warnings: none
Summary:
It was a recent photograph, taken in a department store portrait studio. I recognized them. They were perhaps ten years older than the last time I'd seen them; there was some gray in his hair, more lines on her lovely face, but they were still a striking couple. It was a long time ago, but it was an unusual case, plus I'd taken care of Elizabeth for nearly two months. "You want to know about Elizabeth and Philip Jennings. May I ask why?"

The man began to shake his head but the woman put a hand on his arm. "Yes. After our government changed hands, some of the records went missing. We're interviewing everyone who was involved with the illegals program, even peripherally, to try to piece some things together."

Author's note: Spoilers through "Comrades." Thanks again to [personal profile] theladyscribe for the beta.

The Americans fandom had a very successful Yuletide. Five new stories were added to the growing collection of fanfiction for our series, all of it quite good, too. But wouldn't it be nice to have more?

If you are looking for inspiration, these are the Yuletide letters from the spreadsheet. If you use one of the prompts you can post the gift to the New Year's Resolution 2014 Collection.

Please, please cross-post your Yuletide and NYR stories to our community, too.

If there are any missing letters or signups, let me know and I'll add them here, and try to message the spreadsheet folks.

Inspired by someone on my reading list, my New Year's resolution is to try to write a story each month for the New Year's Resolution Collection.

Are you with me? NO? Fair enough. We all have lives and other fandoms, too. But we have 43 members here. Our fandom currently has 30 stories on AO3. If every member wrote just one story for The Americans between now and next October (or whenever they get it together to send out assignments for Yuletide 2014), we'll have more than doubled the number of stories. If we each write two or three stories, well, the sky is the limit, isn't it?

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year and happy yuletide reveals, everyone! This is the first of what I hope will be a number of post-yuletide fic posts here, because there were a whole bunch of great new stories written for our small-but-mighty fandom in this year's exchange.

Anyway, this year I had the pleasure of fulfilling the request for a The Americans story about Philip and Elizabeth and the kids for our very own [dreamwidth.org profile] sistermagpie (I know, right? How lucky did I get?)!

"Grains of Gold Among the Sand" by Jae Gecko
Summary: Philip Jennings throughout the years, navigating the minefields of marriage and family.
Size: 21159 words
Acknowledgements: To Luna, Minna Leigh, Pene, and Mijra for beta.

And now that I have two out of the three stories posted, let me announce this as well:

The Cost of Silence trilogy

1. (coming in 2014) (Gregory)
2. "Five Points Down" (Elizabeth)
3. "Grains of Gold Among the Sand" (Philip)

Three intersecting pre-canon stories that each deal in different ways with the emotional and interpersonal consequences of the secrets that these people used to keep, not just from the outside world, but from each other.

It's that time of year again--time for the annual Yuletide fanfic exchange.

So what is Yuletide? It's an annual fanfic exchange that concentrates on small fandoms. Put simply: participants offer to write some fandoms and request some fandoms they'd like to read. They are then matched up with other people, one of whom will write one of their requests, the other of whom they will write for themselves.

It's has great potential to produce fic for The Americans.

The gifts are anonymous, so your recipient won't know you're writing for them, or which of their requests you're fulfilling and you won't know who's writing for you or which request is getting filled for you. Over a thousand people participate each year! The stories open on December 25 and remain anonymous until the reveal on January 1.

Basically, it's a very straightforward gift exchange where people get to write and read for the fandoms close to their heart that they don't often get to read. There may be only one other person who wants fic in the fandom you request, but that person will love it all the more.

The first stage of Yuletide is nominations. That's when anyone thinking of participating nominates fandoms they think ought to qualify for the exchange--that is, fandoms that don't already have a lot of fic being written for them. I definitely plan to nominate The Americans this year, and probably request it as well.

I don't want to bog everyone down with details about the exchange in one post, but I'll be glad to answer any questions I can in comments if anyone wants to ask. (Obviously I'm not a mod or anything, but I've participated.) I thought it was a good idea to mention it here because there's so few stories for this fandom, and yet the quality of the stories I've read has been really great so far.

Some important information/links follow:

In order to participate in Yuletide all you need is an account at Archive of Our Own. If you don't have one, you can email the mods of Yuletide, tell them you'd like to participate, and they'll get you one. They can be reached at: yuletide@yuletidetreasure.org.

To participate you'll be writing a story of a minimum of 1,000 words in the fandom your recipient requests, featuring the character(s) they request. Many people also put up a Dear Yuletide Writer letter where they talk about what they like to give you inspiration. People generally really want to give the other person a story they'll love.

There is a generous window to default on your gift if you find you can't finish--don't worry, your recipient will still receive a gift.

The tentative schedule of Yuletide 2013 is as follows:

YULETIDE 2013 SCHEDULE
Nominations: September 16th to September 23rd
Cleanup and Public Eligibility Review: September 23rd to October 7th
Signups: October 7th to October 14th
Assignments: around October 21st
Assignments Due: December 22nd
Collection Opens: December 25th
Author Reveals: January 1st

Here's a link to the archive of all the Yuletide gift stories for 2012 by fandom.

The Yuletide FAQ

The Yuletide Admin Community

Yuletide's the perfect time to request stories from fandoms like this. It might inspire a great writer who never thought or writing for the show to offer it and give you a story. And as you can see from the archive, a gift for one person is really a gift for anybody who loves that fandom and wants fic for it.

I don't write a lot of fic but a few years ago I got tired of seeing so many people I knew dive into this huge fest and gave it a shot--it was really fun.:-) Plus I know there are some amazing writers already in this community and I'm greedy.
