Thank you all so much, all of you, for sharing your love for this wonderful show with us over the course of the last six years. Speaking for myself, it's been a special pleasure getting to know many of you (even a couple of you in person!), but even those I haven't had the opportunity to interact with outside of this comm, I have been awed by your insights and amused by your jokes and just generally very grateful for your contributions here.

I expect the comm to fall quiet (as it has tended to outside of the active seasons anyway, at least when Treon and I haven't deliberately pushed it into activity), but I can't imagine why we'd want to take it down, so please feel free to keep posting about the show if you feel like it.

All the best,
Jae

My TV watching is distinctly limited. I did all of The Sopranos and Rome. I got to whenever the plane crash was in Desperate Housewives before stopping on the grounds that my intelligence was being insulted. I am at the end of s4 of Breaking Bad, and I will make another attempt at Mad Men soon.

Looking at what's being broadcast in the US, I am enjoying Fargo and thought the start of the remake of Being Human was so bad that I wanted to see the people responsible for it staked / shot with a silver bullet / exorcised.

What else should I be considering?

Someone on TWOP posted this quote from the book, saying it reminded them of Philip when they read it:

In the book Everyday Stalinism, the author described the ultimate Soviet as being able to say one belief, secretly believe in another, and act in ways that don't support either of these beliefs.

I thought that was a fascinating quote because so often on the show it's tempting to project ideas of what American vs. Russian or Soviet means, yet any culture actually looks differently on different people. Philip and Elizabeth presumably both grew up being taught that certain beliefs were correct, and that there were consequences for not sharing those beliefs. Elizabeth internalized those beliefs, proudly states them whenever possible and feels she should be passing them on to others. Philip seems to often instinctively avoid talking about his beliefs, preferring to listen to others or be less definitive... More thoughts on the danger of secret beliefs with... )
