Thoughts on World in Conflict: Soviet Assault

For those who aren't familiar with the game, the Wikipedia entry on it is pretty good. There's also a playthrough on YouTube with cutscenes (not all are subtitled).

Anyway, where this has relevance is that it's an alternate history set in 1988/1989 where the USSR's Politburo, probably not led by Gorbachev (or who may have been 'retired' a la Khrushchev) decides on a very desperate gambit to save its ailing economy: Invade Western Europe and the USA and hope a quick victory will let them settle terms on which they can demand foreign aid to prop up their country.

Now given the existence of the illegals program, and the presence of Philip and Elizabeth in Washington, DC, I wonder what they would have been tasked with doing as members of a fifth column behind American lines: very likely continuing espionage, as well as sabotage and assassination operations.

There are a whole host of other things:

* Who or what would P & E's targets be?
* How many of those weapons caches do they have? And what is in them?
* What would Stan be doing by this time?
* What about Paige and Henry?
* What would Arkady be doing?

and probably most importantly,

* Would P & E defect once it is obvious that the Soviet offensive is doomed to bog down in a protracted engagement?

It's not going to be a long war. By 1988, the Politburo would have to be seriously insane to try it: they must know how unreliable the rest of the Warsaw Pact is going to be.

What P&E would most likely do is try to stop it.

If they have any sense, they send P&H out to somewhere remote - and probably Canadian - with someone who can look after them when Washington disappears.
