Okay, everybody--there's a sneak peek for season 2 of The Americans up on iTunes. It's free.
It's about 3 minutes and has some new snippets--no full scenes or anything, but there is some specific information in it. I'm putting it under a cut in case people want to watch it first for themselves!
It's January 1982 when we start (did Elizabeth miss Christmas?)
There's a new guy at the Rezidentura who looks kind of great. He gets caught jamming on his Walkman at his desk and claims he was just trying to "get familiar with American music!"
Elizabeth seems to get called back home not by Henry's birthday (though that's a plus for her) but by the KGB putting her into action.
Remember the scene where Philip's lying on the floor at gunpoint? He gets electrocuted into unconsciousness. Presumably when he wakes up he's been tied up.
Henry gets a telescope!
Philip gets a paper with rows of numbers and letters!
There's some other things people say, but I'd say that's all the concrete information. I think we know that Stan's fallen into a honey trap and is "falling in love with a woman with a very secret agenda" and that the show has no good guy or bad guys except depending on your perspective.
Oh, and we know that it does make sense that Paige would start thinking how Mom and Dad are away for long periods of time and the laundry seems to take forever as well...
Weeee!

Date: 2014-02-12 02:01 am (UTC)That's what I'm wondering... they also made specific references to season one ending in April/May 1981. But for her to be gone for 7 months seems excessive... I'm wondering if the show just decided it was one of those things that couldn't be helped because of the need to move forward time-wise and because they film in winter. Maybe they just intend for it to seem like she was gone for a month or two.
Or maybe she really was gone 7 months! Poor Philip!
Dude. Sucks to be Philip. Gets dunked in the bucket, beat up with the phone book. Hope they don't just have Elizabeth with the pictures of the kids again...
Really? Another one? He has a telescope in his room in the shot in episode 9... maybe it's a better telescope... or maybe it's like Paige's retroactively unpierced ears...
Okay will try again to get it to play...

Date: 2014-02-12 02:13 am (UTC)It does seem really unlikely that she'd be gone all that time. I mean...7 months? That's nuts. I wouldn't be surprised if they just shift our idea of what time it was when she got shot. No one would not see their kids for 7 months to take care of some old woman who fell down the stairs. I suppose if it took that long they might have set something up to fake it--fake great aunt, fake house to visit (which Paige would go back to...) but it still even seems unlikely she'd need that long to recover since she was able to walk with the bullet to begin with.
Arrgh! Didn't mean to hit post!
Oh, he does it to himself this time. He reaches for something for some reason--maybe he's pretending to be a handyman in the room to fix the wiring so he can plant a bug or something. Whatever he touches, it electrocutes him and lays him out flat on the floor.
I would guess it's a better one. The box looks huge. Maybe it's a birthday present.

Date: 2014-02-12 02:21 am (UTC)Right. And I mean, they've sacrificed timeline for storytelling in other places too, and it doesn't really disrupt things. I think knowing they have to film in winter every time and they have to bump things forward to keep up with the kids aging, it's reasonable that they just want us to fudge things a little and not think about it too hard.
And I agree having her gone that long would be completely crazy. Like if she was gone a month, that would be a long time, but plausible. If she was gone much longer than that, I think Stan would start questioning things. Like you said, it's weird for a mom to be completely away from her kids for that long unless something is MAJORLY wrong. If it had to be 7 months, the more reasonable action would be to bring the aunt to them rather than to go there with no visits, etc...
Okay, that makes me feel better... sort of!
Okay, that sounds adorable. I'll just rewrite that paragraph in my fic and retroactively fix it :)

Date: 2014-02-12 02:44 am (UTC)Philip in mustache and coveralls seems to be reaching into a box. He touches something with his hand, there's a zap and sparks and he flies back. It's possible that he's taking a box--it looks like there's a clasp on it--and that the box is booby trapped, like someone was setting a trap for anyone who would try to steal what was there. And he falls to the floor with his eyes open. This is not something that's going to make Elizabeth feel any better...
Paige goes down to the laundry room in darkness and looks at the suitcase--I'm thinking maybe she indeed is checking Elizabeth's suitcase she brought home. (Maybe she then decides to check the bedroom...)
Elizabeth's wearing a long coat when she comes home and Henry jumps on her.
Philip and Elizabeth look a little awkward looking at something, then Paige walks in looking pleased, and the thing they were looking at turns out to be Henry with his telescope. It's a Dynya-2000 Astronomical Telescope. (Dynya seems like it's probably a variation of "Dunya" an Arabic word that refers to the earthly, as opposed to spiritual, realm.
At one point Stan's on a roof with clothes lines and laundry.
Ooh. Looking closely, it seems that Stan meets with the new guy (is this Oleg? They say his name but I couldn't quite catch the pronunciation. It sounded like possibly his name is Oleg Gregoravich but I could be wrong.) Since there's talk of a walk-in to the FBI it's possible that the KGB sends Oleg as a fake turncoat OR, since it's this show, he might actually be one. But if Oleg is being so obvious about his interest in American stuff, I doubt he's really there to switch sides. But he and Stan seem to meet in an empty building.
Philip seems to beat up a guy. :-) He may also shoot that guy he's pointing a gun at in his blond wig.
I spy Elizabeth and Grannie walking together.
Have I squeezed everything possible out of this preview? I should get a second job squeezing blood out of stones!

Date: 2014-02-12 05:12 pm (UTC)It's funny--you put up a link recently--I think it was maybe the Finnish preview for the show?--something like that, and it wouldn't play for me. I was like, "What? Why won't this play? This isn't fair--good God, is this what it feels like to not live in the US a lot of the time?!"

Date: 2014-02-13 08:39 pm (UTC)The "back in time for her son's birthday" could mean that she feels well enough/recovered so they could go all out on Henry's birthday (I'm guessing, that line seems odd)
It sounded like the new guy's name is Oleg Grigorevich. I like the look of him, he seems like a fun addition.
(I need to get used to Matthew Rhys' real accent. I have to rewatch his parts because I'm usually startled by his accent.)

Date: 2014-02-14 01:15 am (UTC)I was just wondering is this itunes snippet the same thing as the "first look at s2"? http://screencapped.net/tv/theamericans/thumbnails.php?album=32
I wish it was available in non-US itunes :(
