I am still not nuts about teasers as a general rule (I far prefer the trailers with actual clips from the show), but these are actually pretty good! The first one is very pretty.
Especially the ones like the second one-those are always just a bit silly. But the first one really is pretty. I don't mind the ones that are basically just imagery.
I quite like the teasers. You can't take them as part of the show but as child of itself. These are of artistic feel to help promote. Frankly I like that they are even making them. It is like "gift" with your new car, you know that you are paying for it in base price and that you car could be chaper by price of the "gift", but it is nice nonetheless.
The first one is great symbolic imagery for the season. The second one I could have done without. I get that they like to sell the show with sex, especially in the US, but it's so much more than that. And the sex is always motivated by something, it's not just gratuitous titillation, like on so many other shows. This type of teaser just sends the wrong message.
But then, I feel like at this point they've given in on thinking they're going to get new viewers. I think someone was telling me that a critic was watching screeners of the first couple of eps of S4 and they said they loved how TV now often just blatantly expects viewers to know what's going on. There's nothing in the eps that would help a new viewer catch up.
So that teaser basically says: they have sex with other people for nefarious purposes but they're really a couple...
p.s. LOL. Must have been funny to be cast as the other man and woman in that teaser!
Well said. The second one is too clichéd. Spy wars. It is not even funny for long term viewer. (They don't take theirs guns from under theirs wigs.)
I think that the show is pretty much "against" sex - or normal view of sex in modern - well, better would be modern West/American - society. When the sex was about sex, it was about familiarity. It was not sexy, glamorous or - I don't know- hip(?) And this teaser goes against it. But as I said, teasers have almost nothing to do with the actual show, these are niceties and bonus tracks that say that somebody cares, that it is not your normal run-of-the-mill police procedural.
I like that note about it, that the teasers are basically not saying "this is what the show is like" but the fact that they make these kinds of teasers say that it's not an action show or a regular procedural. What the teasers do get is that the show takes little moments and fills them with heavy meaning. The teasers with the US/USSR imagery reminds you that every interaction of the characters is part of this black and white conflict (so all their grey choices have black and white consequences) and the other teasers are sort of showing that the characters' lives are stark morality plays with them as the puppets.
That's a great analysis! I especially liked the first one's symbolism in that it shows the US "attack" the USSR, mirroring Reagan's message in the last moments of Season 3.
I am not sure why they even bother. People from outside of USA will view it anyway. Maybe because of rights to music, but then they are doing show which will be aired in many countries after they sell the rights. They have to have means to get the music with worldwide rights. So why?
