I had started noticing that the showrunners were talking about the difficulty of moving the story forward in time in interviews, so I suppose I should have seen a time jump coming, but like you, I didn't either. I found it a little awkward, but the thematic resonances with "making something disappear" were very cool, and I particularly appreciated that there was such a change in tone (both on the emotional level and in terms of the filmmaking) after the jump. I think it was about as well done as it could have been.
