Spotting the tail
He obviously knew Stan was behind him. And so lucky for him it was Stan, otherwise he'd probably be in jail right now.
It's hard for me to accept that he spotted that tail. Maybe he didn't know he was being tailed, just assumed he would be?

And yeah, "assuming he was being tailed" would be my read as well, if it wasn't some sort of set-up. Because they had FOUR CARS! Four! Even two is supposed to be almost impossible to see unless you're really, really good!
