The interviews with cast and creatives continue unabated (all five of the following contain spoilers for season two):
• FX has released an "Inside the Secrets" youtube interview with showrunner Joel Fields (video, 1.5 minutes long), in which he answered fan questions from last year.

• U.S. National Public Radio's show Studio 360 also had an interview with showrunner Joe Weisberg (audio, 12 minutes long).

Esquire also has an interview with Joe Weisberg about the spy techniques in "Comrades."

• And NPR's Leonard Lopate had a Noah Emmerich interview (audio, 18 minutes long).

• Keri Russell also did an interview (a print one), this time with the Sioux City Journal.
Good news about the ratings for the season two premiere: viewing rose a whopping 81% in the show's key demographic when "time-shifted viewing" was taken into account.

UK's Geektown is suggesting (unconfirmed) that season two will begin in the UK on the 28th of March, based on speculation that season two will run straight through after they finish repeating the season one episodes. The Daily Mirror also suggests that it's likely to return "in the spring". What is confirmed, though, is that it will return, and that it will continue to air on ITV.

Grantland's Hollywood Prospectus podcast with Chris Ryan and Andy Greenwald deals with The Americans (starting from 41:36).

FX sponsored a "training day for spies" to promote The Americans and invited journalists on it. Buzzfeed's Alan White reports on the event.

And freelance journalist Jonathan Frochtzwajg has written a piece on medium.com called "Mirror, Mir: Why Cold War Piece The Americans is TV's Most Relevant Spy Show." No spoilers in this, in part because it seems to have been written partway through last year.

The official reviews of season two are starting to roll in from various U.S. publications: from the San Francisco Chronicle, from the Tampa Bay Times, from Indiewire, from the Los Angeles Daily News, from the San Jose Mercury-News, from Slant Magazine, and finally, from the Huffington Post (this one is really a negative review of season two of House of Cards, but there's a positive comparison with The Americans in the final bit).

The full Wall Street Journal Live at Bryant Park "How The Americans Recreates the Cold War" panel has been posted (30-min video).

An interview with Keri Russell (Elizabeth) from the LA Daily News (with some season two spoilers).

And an interview with Matthew Rhys (Philip) from the New York Daily News (also with some season two spoilers).

And an interview with Noah Emmerich (Stan) from Paste Magazine (also with some season two spoilers).

And an interview with Peg Schierholz and Lori Hicks from the Hair and Makeup Department, from the Washington Post.

A couple of things from Twitter: according to script supervisor Molly Nussbaum, The Americans made the very top of this coming week's "must list" in Entertainment Weekly. And cut for a casting spoiler )

And the comm's own [dreamwidth.org profile] quantumreality with the third part of the essay on symmetries in The Americans.

The Americans is going to be the subject of canada.com's TV Chat critics' panel on Monday at 2pm eastern time.

The TV Ate My Wardrobe blog sent someone to cover the season one DVD/Blu-Ray launch event.

The Staten Island Advance on the use of a local location as a backdrop to an episode of The Americans.

And finally, here's a little clip of Keri Russell on Late Night With David Letterman (on channelling her inner Elizabeth when her apartment was broken into).

Yes, I'm back already with another linkspam! I could maaaaaybe have waited another day, but some of this stuff has been so good, and I feel moved to share.

I'll start with a really very different sort of interview with Joel Fields from spoilertv.com that took questions in advance from the fans and got him to answer them. There are spoilers galore, but I suspect that a couple of people in this community will be very excited to see some of the responses there. :)

And then there's this other interview from tv.com with Joel and Joe Weisberg, which also has some spoilers in it.

And then there's another interview with the two of them from the Huffington Post, which also has some spoilers in it.

And one more from iamrogue.com, also with the two of them and also with some season two spoilers.

There are also four short videos from the Bryant Park interview of two days ago with Joe Weisberg, Joel Fields, and Noah Emmerich: on nuclear launch codes, creating 1980s D.C. in New York City, designing spycraft for The Americans, and on the secret life of Stan (none of which are particularly spoilerrific).

Next, [tumblr.com profile] nerd-utopia has got screenshots of the terrific The Americans spread and multi-page article in TV Guide: 1, 2.

And a lovely profile on Holly Taylor (Paige) from Canadian newspaper The Ottawa Citizen.

And The Saratogian has a great review of season two from the screeners.

And speaking of which, guys, I don't know how much you've all been following the early critical response to this show's second season, but it's been so fantastic. Over at the [tumblr.com profile] americansfan tumblr, Emma put together a representative compilation of it. And, like, the only negative comments I can find about the show at all (and I've looked!) are from critics like rogerebert.com's Brian Tallerico who wasn't completely on board with season one but still thinks season two is amazing. The critics have always been good to this show, but this is truly unprecedented.

Fast Company has a terrific interview with The Americans' music supervisor PJ Bloom.

The website kerirussellsource.org has a bunch of shots of the filming of the season two finale, which is currently ongoing.

Over at Tumblr, [tumblr.com profile] darjeelingandcoke is doing a countdown list of eight reasons to watch The Americans in the last eight days before the season two premiere: here's #8.

And finally, this already got linked separately, but in case there's someone out there who's only got a subscription to certain tags: part one and part two of [dreamwidth.org profile] quantumreality's essay on symmetries in The Americans.

Five days, 10.5 hours to go!

This week's TV Guide features a piece with a lot of juicy season two spoilers in it (including at least a few bits not mentioned previously).

A look at the press kit for season two that a bunch of very lucky television journalists have received over the last week (no spoilers).

We now have a full episode description for episode 204 (second season, fourth episode).

For those of you in North America: Keri Russell is going to be on Late Night with David Letterman on Thursday, February 20th. Set your PVRs!

And for those of you in New York or who can get there easily, there is a free and open-to-the-public panel interview tomorrow morning at Bryant Park with showrunners Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields and actor Noah Emmerich (Stan). I hope someone can make it and do a writeup for us!

This hour-long panel from the Academy of Television Arts And Sciences with Joel Fields, Joe Weisberg, Noah Emmerich, Matthew Rhys (Philip), Annet Mahendru (Nina), and Margo Martindale (Claudia) is actually from last spring, but I didn't link it then, and it's been making the rounds again.

I've been trying to get people to come here and link to their own fanworks rather than linking to them myself in my linkspams, but this very clever picspam by [tumblr.com profile] belovedcreation that reimagines images from Austenland and Death Comes to Pemberley as a The Americans AU was too good to pass up. :)

There was a great review of the season one DVD/Blu-Ray set from Australia this week. And based on one of the little featurettes on the set, TV.com did a little piece on "Clark" and Martha's "marriage".

And finally, for the fanwriters and fanartists out there, there's a multifandom fanfiction and art fest going on, and also a multifandom fanfiction fest celebrating friendship. Go forth and request/create The Americans fanworks!

This is just another little tiny tidbit for the season 2, but one that I thought was so awesome I just had to post it. It's from a review of the second season in EW posted here: http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20786364,00.html

The reviewer thinks S2 looks awesome!

Here's the little spoiler in the review Under the cut )

Okay, everybody--there's a sneak peek for season 2 of The Americans up on iTunes. It's free.

It's about 3 minutes and has some new snippets--no full scenes or anything, but there is some specific information in it. I'm putting it under a cut in case people want to watch it first for themselves!

Tidbits within )

Get ready for a ludicrous number of links this time!

First off, there's a great interview with Keri Russell (Elizabeth) and Matthew Rhys (Philip) in Entertainment Weekly that's sadly behind a paywall, but [tumblr.com profile] jenningscomrades posted a series of readable screenshots over at Tumblr.

And speaking of Tumblr, the full set of promotional pictures for season two was posted by [tumblr.com profile] theamericanstv there too: 1, 2.

In further interviews, writer/showrunner Joe Weisberg was interviewed at the Writers' Guild of America Awards (the bit with Weisberg starts at 8:05), including at least a couple of things he hasn't already said a thousand times. :)

The show's costume designer Jenny Gering was also interviewed in Elle.

Episode 201 hasn't yet aired, of course, but we now have the plot description for episode 202.

According to writer/showrunner Joel Fields on Twitter, the script for the season two finale was finished this week, and the title for episode ten has been released.

And in the vein of "better late than never," the first season of our favourite show starts airing in Finland today on MTV (there's a trailer at the site and also a wonderful promotional campaign there) and in Germany on ProSieben Maxx (here's a trailer--dubbed, as is par for the course in Germany and a review from the Spiegel for those of you who speak German).

Any of you who are in New York or can get there easily can buy raffle tickets to join cast and crew in style at the season premiere (and get to see the first episode two days early!).

Bad news for anyone who was hoping to see The Americans on Netflix someday: Fox (which owns FX) and Amazon have signed a new distribution agreement granting Amazon Prime's Instant Video subscribers exclusive rights to the show.

There have been a few voices in the media that are hyping the season one DVD/Blu-Ray release in the hope of snagging new viewers before season two: The Philadelphia Inquirer, and Rotten Tomatoes (which chose The Americans as their Weekly Binge show last week).

And last but not least, here's a shot of Matthew Rhys checking out the timeline in the writers' room. (16 days!)

From Vulture, Keri Russell gives an interview about season two. Mild spoilers to be found (including one tidbit that hadn't been mentioned yet).

An official summary of episode 201 (second season, first episode) has been released.

The promo trailers that have been airing on FX are slowly being released. It seems that they're first being posted on the official Facebook page (so far the "Paige and Henry" trailer and the "Danger" trailer are up). There are also copies here if you'd prefer not to go to Facebook, but Facebook is where FX seems to be releasing them first.

Over on Tumblr, [tumblr.com profile] mrbelpitsleg (better known to us dreamwidthers as [dreamwidth.org profile] theplatonicnonyeah) has posted some still shots from the various trailers to give us a better look: 1, 2, 3.

And finally, here are Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell co-presenting an award at the 2014 Writers' Guild Awards.

[Edited to add: Okay, this really can't wait until next week! There's a season one gag reel that's just been released--it's almost certainly the one that's on the season one DVD.]

First up: there are two new promos! Only one of them has been posted yet, the teaser "Bed", but [dreamwidth.org profile] sistermagpie has confirmed that there is also an actual trailer with new footage, and I'd imagine that it will be up at the official FX youtube playlist soon (probably immediately now that I've posted this linkspam *g*).

Two new pieces that seem to be left over from the Television Association Critics Press Tour: from ign.com and from Bustle. (Minor spoilers ahoy, as with the previous pieces from the tour.)

Vanity Fair has a piece on Keri Russell that's only partly about the show, but there's some stuff there I hadn't known, so.

And finally, the title of season two, episode eight has been released.

Well, clearly I should have waited just one more day to post the last linkspam! Live and learn.

First up this time around is a marvelous Writers' Guild of America interview with Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields. (This is what you want to click on if you're avoiding any hint of spoilers, because they don't really get into season two.)

Next, all sorts of goodness from the season two TCA press tour panel yesterday: from The AV Club, the LA Times, Hitfix, TVLine, Entertainment Weekly, zap2it.com, USA Today, and Deadline. There's a lot of repetition, but if you have time, you'll read all of them, because each publication puts the focus on slightly different information. Oh, and spoilers (mild ones, but still spoilers) abound, obviously.

And last, there's the official FX playlist for the trailers and teasers that have been released. (There's apparently one more recent one out there that presumably will eventually be posted there, but I haven't been able to find it online yet.) The new one is up!

FX presented their upcoming programming to the Television Critics' Association today. The "Americansfan" tumblr blog has some photos and some very mild spoilers, and TVline and USA Today hash through some of the information they're letting out about season two as well.

Two of the critics who most strongly championed the show in its first season, Matt Zoller Seitz of Vulture and Alyssa Rosenberg of Think Progress, have reviewed screeners for the first two episodes and pronounced them good. Seitz says: crisp, densely packed storytelling; double lives abound, more family emphasis, and Rosenberg says: watching the new season and getting enraged over the lack of awards attention it got all over again and also, the new season is great.

Apparently paparazzi can be good for something: one of them took a bunch of photos of Keri Russell while she was filming a fight scene for season two. And one of Matthew Rhys' makeup artists has a photo of him from filming as well.

And last but not least, it seems that if you were a New York-based actor, you could get your headshots taken by the one and only Arkady Ivanovich.

Okay, folks, the first serious spoilers have been released into the world. Think long and hard whether you want to click on these links: from Michael Ausiello's "Ask Ausiello" column and from Natalie Abrams' "Megabuzz" column.

Warning: There will almost certainly be discussion of these spoilers in the comments section of this post!

In lesser-spoilery links, there are also a few smaller tidbits that we could probably deduce ourselves from an interview with Joe Weisberg if you want something to tide you over but want to avoid the more serious stuff.

There's also a new teaser promo called "Stripes." On Twitter, Joel Fields also released a shot of the second image of the second season from an editing session, a shot of the trailer where they're filming, and a picture of an awesome mug that he got as a Christmas present.

And finally, while this Hollywood Reporter review is supposedly reviewing the miniseries The Assets, it actually talks as much, and much more favourably, about our show.

Coming Soon is announcing that the premiere of season two will be on February 26th (so if you guessed that in our poll, pat yourself on the back)

Some new season two spoilers about the content of the premiere episode (if you're supremely spoiler-averse, don't hover on the link)

and one last best-of-2013 list, this time from Las Vegas Weekly.

[personal profile] jae
The most important thing is the first trailer for season two that actually contains new footage. :D :D :D Is it February yet???

Next, our show continues to clean up on the year-end lists! The Americans made it to:
Huffington Post's list of the best new shows of 2013
Indiewire's list of the top 10 shows of 2013
The New York Times list of the top 12 shows of 2013
The Chicago Sun Times top ten list
Think Progress's Year in Culture list
Screen Invasion's best shows of 2013 list
yahoo.com's best shows of 2013 slideshow
• and TV.com's 9 shows to catch up on over the holiday break

Episodes of the show also made it to Matt Zoller Seitz' list of the top drama episodes of 2013 ("Gregory" and "Only You"), and Laurel Brown's list of the best TV episodes of 2013 (the pilot).

The character of Elizabeth Jennings was also featured on Grantland's year-end TV power rankings.

And last but not least, the show is also #7 on Hitflix's TV Critics Poll this year for Top TV Shows and #3 for Best New Shows of 2013 (this annual poll takes a panel of several high-profile critics' top-ten rankings and combines them).

Finally, in non-year-end-list news, there's a great Salon interview with Margo Martindale that's mostly about August Osage County but not just, and I've got a few yet-unmentioned semi-spoilery bits from the writers and producers on Twitter:
• the titles for episode 6 and episode 7
• a couple of shots of props and sets from future episodes: 1, 2
• another cryptic shot of the writers' board
• and a shot of The Americans in its very first Jeopardy question :)

A tiny (and non-spoilery, as far as I can tell) teaser trailer has been released for season two! They've given it a name ("Hidden") and there are hints that there will be others. [Edited to add: Another one, "Dinner Table," has also been released now.]

Guys, guys, our show is cleaning up in the Top Ten lists this year. Here are several more: the Washington Post, Vulture (and here's what it looks like in the actual magazine), and the American Film Institute list.

Antennafree TV features The Americans as one of the thirteen new TV shows you should binge-watch over the holidays.

On the spoiler front, ScreenCrush talks about the teaser and the other known spoilers that have been released so far (but also mentions one I hadn't seen before), the title has been revealed for season two, episode six, Joel Fields tweeted a photo of an editor working with the opening shot for season two, and there are now several shots of the "80s wall" in the The Americans writers' room: one of Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg standing in front of it early in the season, a closeup revealing potential spoilery things, and another closeup revealing potential spoilery things.

The International Press Academy has announced nominations for their Satellite Awards, and several people connected with The Americans have been nominated: Margo Martindale (Claudia) for Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Miniseries, or Motion Picture Made for Television, Keri Russell (Elizabeth) for Actress in a Series, Drama, and the show for Television Series, Drama.

The AV Club argues that in 2013, no show used pop music better than The Americans.

Advertising artist Sam Spratt did some early advertising sketches and art for the show, and they're kind of awesome.

The name of episode 5, season two has been released! And ignore the UGH so annoying tone of the piece, but here's a picture of Keri Russell on set while filming season two.

I'll start with two recent pieces that really get into some detail about the show and the making of it: a great interview with the The Americans editors from Editors Guild Magazine, and a piece with a focus on Keri Russell from Capitol File Magazine. Both have very (very very!) minor spoilers for storylines in season two.

Next, a satisfying "guide to the TV galaxy" from the Weekly Wonk (a U.S.-based political magazine) that focuses primarily on awesome non-U.S. shows, but pays tribute to our show as well. :)

And finally, some tiny tidbits from Twitter:

Non-spoileriffic: a cute photo of a cat on Matthew Rhys' chair, a shot of the actors who play Martha, Nina, and Sandra together at a recent fundraiser, and a picture of showrunners Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg together on set while filming.

Mildly spoileriffic: a shot of a prop from a corner of a set, a shot of the filming of an outdoor scene, a shot of Keri Russell in disguise, two tweets from writer Angelina Burnett about the shooting of an episode that she wrote (including one very intriguing spoiler!), and a photo of a script that reveals the title for season two, episode four.

(Heads-up to the spoilerphobes: there may be discussion of the spoilers linked to above in the comments.)

Movieweb is reporting that the release date for the region one (North America) DVD and Blu-Ray sets for The Americans season one is January 14th. The set will include the mini-documentaries "Executive Order 2579: Exposing the Americans", "Perfecting the Art of Espionage", and "Ingenuity Over Technology", plus a gag reel, deleted scenes, trailers, and audio commentary on the season finale featuring Joe Weisberg, Joel Fields, and Noah Emmerich.

(Pardon me while I stick my fist in the air and say "yes!")

And here's another not-particularly-spoilery photo taken during shooting.

Treon noticed that thetvdb is now listing the U.S./Canada debut airdate for season two, episode one as February 5th, 2014. This is unconfirmed, but it's the first mention either of us has noticed of a specific date, so we figured it was worth mentioning. They have now removed this listing.

This little tidbit from Variety includes a short interview with Annet Mahendru (Nina).

Another fan in the New York area took some pictures of a day's shooting and posted them to instagram (only very minor spoilers included in the pictures).
