Next they bring their issues to Dad Gabriel, who in turn vents at Claudia, which was such a great little scene, if that phrase makes sense. I treasure each and every one of the Gabriel & Claudia scenes because they always let us know how Gabriel views things when he's not in his handler role with P & E, the insecurities he doesn't show them, but this one had the added bonus of Gabriel bringing up the Stalinist Purges as a formative experience for him again.
I actually sometimes have a little issue with the scenes with Claudia--I often feel cynically like they're partly keeping that character around because she's the only person connected with the show who ever wins awards. But I did unambiguously like this one, for all the reasons you point out. I feel like Gabriel's ongoing relationship with Claudia shows us a side to him that there would be no way to otherwise see--the part of him who feels like he's losing control and can't make his agents see that they need to listen to him. I also loved the fact that there were such clear echoes of the way Elizabeth was thinking about Paige in Gabriel's attitude toward Philip and Elizabeth.
